Concrete Patio DIY
Concrete Patio DIY
It’s that time of year most of us have been looking waiting for. Spring has arrived!

If a concrete patio is a feature that would look great in your backyard space and if you are the type of person who likes tackle projects yourself, think about gratifying it would be to build your new patio yourself. It’s not a difficult project, just gather the right
materials and follow these steps to your new concrete patio.
Here are the tools, materials and equipment you will need:
- Shovel
- Wheelbarrow
- Hand saw
- 48” level
- Hammer
- Drill driver
- Trowel
- Broom
- 2x6 or 2x8 lumber for forms
- 1.5” x 1.5” x 18” wooden stakes
- #10 x 3.5” deck screws
- Crushed stone
- Concrete reinforcing fibers
- Spray
- String and stakes
- Portable cement mixer or ready-mixed concrete
- Masonry cut-off saw
Here’s the how-to:
1. Mark where the patio is going using spray paint or string and stakes.
2. Excavate the area by hand using a shovel or rent a mini-excavator for a large area. Be sure the area is 18” longer and wider than the finished area to accommodate for the room needed for the space for walking around. Be sure to dig down 8” when excavating.
3. Assemble forms joining 2x6 or 2x8 lumber to form the outer shape. Use the deck screws to join eachcorner. (3 in each corner will work.)
4. Make sure the form is straight by placing string along the wooden form. Place the string every 36” along the lumber.
5. Use a level to make sure the form is level.
6. Add the crushed stone by shovel until the depth of the stone when raked and levelled is a consistent depth down from the top edge of the form boards. (This will the thickness of the patio’s concrete.)
7. Add reinforcement to minimize cracking in the future. Use mesh for this. Place the mesh on the bottom of the form then lift it up while pour the cement so the mesh is 2’ from the bottom.
8. Pour concrete. For a small patio the ready-to-mix (just add water) is absolutely good to use. Just add the mix to a portable concrete mixer and blend until it is the consistency of cake batter. With a large area you can order ready made concrete of make your own with crushed stone, sand and cement. The formula is 2 parts crushed stone, 2 parts sand and 1 part cement.
After 2 weeks:
The concrete will be dry and cured. At this point, use a masonry saw and make cut 2” cuts down in the concrete and make a grid of these cuts about 10’ apart. This will aid in preventing cracks.
